Fiery Momo Chutney...Explosive Stuff!

Bustling Bangalore to sleepy Kalimpong(all the more now because of the GJM called Janta curfew) has indeed been some transition! Well, that's how life in the army is. From swanky restaurants and amazing pubs to roadside Momo stalls and dingy eateries! Such a big jolt! But then over a period of a few months we tried them out( as if there were other options!) and found that they were not so bad!In fact we got hooked on to the Juicy momos with the quintessential Momo Chutney!
Now! this is about the Momo Chutney which explodes in your mouth like a million fire crackers! It is spicy, Tangy, fiery and can accompany any snack that needs a chutney, which I found out accidentally. The Momo Chutney is made out of very-very explosive local chillies called The Dalle (Respect people!). We get them in the local Haat Bazaar of Kalimpong which is set up every Wednesdays and Saturdays. For me, it is therapeutic to visit the Haat and watch the beautiful Gorkhali ladies selling fresh produce from their backyard - better than visiting a Mall, any day. I buy whatever odd-looking veggie I can get hold of and try them out on my folks to their utter dismay!

Today I will share my version of the Momo Chutney that is quick, easy and of course fiery...I hope you like it! Children, please stay away!

Ingredients:
  • Dried red chillies (about 20 soaked in warm water) - use Dalle if you dare!
  • Peeled garlic cloves (about 1/2 a cup)
  • Salt to taste
  • Synthetic vinegar (1/2 a cup or to taste)
Method:

  • Put everything except vinegar in a grinder and grind to a fine paste.
  •  Keep adding vinegar in between and check for tartness.
  • There! it is done!
Momo Chutney

This easy momo chutney can be mixed into salads, used as a spread and relished with pakodas and rolls. I use it as a flavouring ingredient for some of my curries and even chilli chicken and paneer! Thukpa is another amazing dish I enjoy which is a favourite among the locals.
But a word of caution! Keep away from the Dalle if you are chicken hearted! We are talking about some real stuff here!
